a broom, duct tape & a hero

We had a wasp in the house today. It flew in and disappeared right as Ryan was supposed to leave for work. Of course! We spent 20 minutes searching the entire house trying to find it with no luck. So Ryan sped off to work, and left us to fend for ourselves…

Not even 30 minutes later I heard it buzzing around the living room. It was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up there.  In the 2-story vault. We spent the whole afternoon throwing beanbags into the window trying to smoosh it. We hit him a few times, but failed to cause any damage.

After the bean bags got stuck in the window we started throwing empty bottles. And socks. And gloves. Then gloves stuffed with shoes. And all manner of objects. The wasp didn’t budge. At this point he had been a guest in our home for 6 hours.

That’s when I knew I would have to whip out the big guns. I don’t have a great picture of our weapon (photography courtesy of Drew), but imagine a mailing tube duct taped to a broom. Yeah that oughta do it, and if it doesn’t, it was Ryan’s idea.

I obviously didn’t have the presence of mind to remove the dustpan before attacking. Who has any mind at all when a big nasty wasp is buzzing around the house?

I thought I had him, but alas, he crawled up the window once again like nothing had happened. We were losing daylight, and I was afraid we’d have to sleep with a bulletproof wasp on the loose. *shudder*

And that’s when the door knocked, and the hero came in.

Rob Clark saved the day. And the night! One of the kids took this picture with Drew’s Fisher Price camera right before he left. It seems like such a small bug, but it was a huge relief to me and the kids! Thanks Rob!

movie night

There was an ultra-exclusive movie premiere the other night. It wasn’t showing in a few select cities, it wasn’t in 3-D or in some super-duper-sound-certified theatre. This premiere was under the big top. Only three tickets were available. Did I get one? Nooooooooo I did not. But my photo crew & I were determined to identity of the bigshots who made it in!

At first all my team could produce were aerial shots, from the helicopter. That’s right.

But like any good paparazzi I paid off the head of security and was able to sneak in for a close-up.

There’s the head of security, enjoying the fruits of bribery.

It seems all three people, the head of security and the two unnamed bigwigs, were totally hypnotised by the film. I can’t wait to see it for myself if it ever comes out of that little tent, er…uhh, I mean theatre!

introducing…

We would like to introduce the newest member of the Oscar Stew family. This is our new watermark. Drawn by Brinley with a little bit of help and direction. We’re grateful for those we know sharing in the fun & flops we’ve had, but we have a growing concern about all of you unknowns out there. We get a lot of visits from places where we don’t know anyone, not to mention all those hiding behind Google Reader. We want to make sure our pictures and life experiences don’t end up in the wrong hands. At the same time we don’t really like the thought of making Oscar Stew a private blog. Not that a fierce drawing of a blood-sucking vampire guinea pig will stop anyone, but you get the idea. Thanks for stopping by!
